About Ilsington Parish Council

The parish of Ilsington covers a large part of the Dartmoor National Park and the land bordering it. It is a parish with a split personality, divided into two distinct areas, one with High Moor characteristics and one with commuter and dormitory areas.

Most of the population of the parish lives in 2% of the area, in the Old Liverton and Coldeast districts, the rest of the population being spread out over the villages of Haytor Vale, Higher Brimley, South Knighton, Ingsdon and Chipley. We have 2 primary schools in the parish, both receiving good reports from the latest Offsted Inspections.

On first inspection the parish looks and feels like an idyllic place to live and that is true in some respects. We have beautiful scenery, interesting historical sites, including a 12th century Church, good walking areas and some very good pubs!

However we also have the all too common downside of any rural area, being a lack of public transport and local evening activities, especially for our teenage and young people. We are lucky enough to have 2 vibrant village halls in the parish and they are both extremely busy, providing facilities for all sorts of clubs and societies from playgroups, scouts, cubs and brownies through to Women’s Institute meetings and Dance Classes.
